Graduate studies at Burren College of Art are based on the idea of art as a process
of enquiry. An enquiring mind is essential to any university level education, and in
art the process takes place through studio research, supported by related scholarly studies. The field of enquiry is chosen by the student and one aspect of it is always the student's own creative process and its further development. The formal aspect of
learning and teaching is mainly through tutorial process in which a student expresses a set of intentions, recognising that intentions will evolve through time. These intentions are a basis of discussion between students and faculty and they are referred to in assessment. Assessment is on a credit/no credit basis, without grades.

If the aim of undergraduate studies in fine art is to achieve competence in the practice and understanding of art, the aim of graduate studies is to build on that ability to attain focus and direction (at post baccalaureate level); or to generate new perceptions of art and the ability to practice as an artist (at Masters level); or to generate new knowledge in art and contribute to the leadership of art (at Doctoral level). The Burren College of Art provides for all three graduate levels. This is a ladder of opportunity for artists committed to the intelligence of art.

The Ladder of Opportunity at Burren College of Art

The PhD is for artists who want to attain leadership in their specialization by generating a contribution to knowledge and understanding in Fine Art on the international scale.

The MFA is for emerging artists who want to practice professionally and who want the credentials to teach at university level. It is also for those who wish to progress to PhD, although progression to PhD is not guaranteed.

The Post Baccaleurate is for potential artists who have completed a Bachelors degree in Fine Art or another subject, but who are not yet ready for an MFA. This programme prepares you for admission to an MFA although progression to an MFA is not guaranteed.

If you are not sure which level is right for you then contact us informally to ask our opinion without prejudice. You can do this by emailing your enquiry to anna@burrencollege.ie
