Post Baccalaureate CertificateIntroductionThe Post-Bac programme offers a one year full time introduction to graduate level fine art education to students who are not yet ready to undertake a two-year Master of Fine Art programme or who do not wish to do so. Whilst the Post-Bac is a familiar element of the curriculum of many art colleges in the USA it is less familiar within Europe where the one year MA has been more common to date than the two year MFA. With the European Union’s agreement within the Bologna Agreement to establish two-year Masters programmes across Europe this is set to change. It may be helpful to think of the Post-Bac as a Pre-MFA, although the Post Bac (like the MA) does provide for students who wish to study fine art for its own sake without an intention to progress to an MFA.
The Post-Bac at Burren College of ArtThe Post-Bac at the Burren College of Art is unique. The environment of this programme gives students the time and space to create and debate art in the inspirational landscape of the Burren, free from urban distractions. This is an ideal location for high level reflection and energetic creation. Whilst the landscape is an essential aspect of the College’s unique location, this College does not specialise in landscape art. For many students the landscape is a context for art rather than its subject. The remote yet internationally connected character of the college places us at the confluence of European and American cultures. This is a place of international ideas yet it has its own distinctive cultural heritage that is five thousand years old. The Post Bac is accredited by the National University of Ireland, Galway and leads to the award of the Higher Diploma in Fine Art. Post Bac students are full students of the university as well as the Burren College of Art and have access to its library and other facilities.
Programme OverviewSince students whose artistic identity is not yet clearly formed are very diverse in their needs, this programme is structured flexibly so as to respond to and fulfil that wide range of requirements and interests. Each student's programme is individually negotiated and agreed. This structural flexibility distinguishes it from the MFA programme, which offers a personally oriented developmental programme leading to professional practice.
