DRAWING WORKSHOPS
HOW TO MAKE A MARK
13th, 14th,15th May
With Prof. Timothy Emlyn Jones
Course Fee €230
3 nights B&B accommodation plus 2-course lunch each day €150 single / €120 double or twin p.p.
Exploring unconventional mediums and methods of drawing
Any experienced drawing artist will have developed a personal visual language over time. This will include personal ways of making marks creating images, and representing what they see, based on what they have learnt from both tuition and experience in the studio. This sense of familiarity with creative process brings self confidence and comfort; it makes the artist feel at home. This 3 day workshop is about going beyond the comfort zone by means of experimental drawing – it is about leaving home as a creative artist.
The emphasis in this new course will be on the mark itself and the many unconventional ways that can be discovered for making marks. We will explore the many wonderful drawing implements to be discovered in the wild in the hills, fields and shorelines of the Burren as well as in the wealth of potential to be found in the waste bin. We will also explore the many ways the body's movements can give rise to marks beyond the conventions of traditional drawing craft. This experimental course will be both great fun and a serious challenge to what we already know as artists. The level of this course will suit any artist who has previous experience, whether you have been to art school or not. It is not suitable for absolute beginners.
The workshop will consist of many short projects, each of which represents a distinct challenge or opportunity (the difference between those two being how you view them). There will also be illustrated talks and opportunities for focussed studio time in the large purpose-built studios of this art school. Some previous experience is necessary to benefit from this workshop. This workshop is open to a maximum of 16 participants
Tim has exhibited drawings and performance art internationally and he is represented in public collections in a number of countries. His most recent exhibitions include: RHA Annual 2012 (invited artist); RE Open (the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers, London); Into Irish Drawing at Limerick City Gallery of Art (and touring Europe); The Idea of The Rain, a permanent installation at NUI Galway; International Exhibition of Artists' Books at Cheoung-ju in Korea; Shuimo Identity at CAFA in Beijing; Drawing Connections at COFA in Sydney. Earlier exhibitions include Documenta, Prospectiva, and Kontrapunkt. He is currently Dean of Burren College of Art.

HOW TO USE YOUR EYES
Monday, 5th – Friday, 9th August
With Prof. Timothy Emlyn Jones
Course Fee €350
5 nights B&B accommodation plus 2-course lunch each day €230 single / €185 double or twin p.p.
Observation, experimental drawing and self-discovery
Visual art is always about the act of looking, and what you are able to see reveals an aspect of yourself, no matter what the apparent subject matter. There are many ways of looking and this short course is about experimenting with the act of observation and self-recognition, explored through the act of drawing.
This intensive workshop will help you to explore looking and seeing by means of drawing on location in the Burren and in the college studios. Rather than setting out to make pictures of what we see, we will explore different ways of looking – the gaze; the glance; the glimpse; the scrutinising stare; and others. We will also experiment with mark making ranging from wild scribble to measured marks to performative gesture. Our subject matter will include the land and its weather; the human figure at rest and in motion; interior spaces; found objects; the fall of light; and mediated images. There will also be an introduction to some of the theory of looking and personality difference. However, the core of this workshop will constantly be the practice of observing and drawing, and the discoveries to which they lead.
Each day will commence with a short introduction followed by either a visit to a selected location for field work, or studio work at the college (the weather will determine the details of the schedule). There will also be two short illustrated talks. Each participant will have dedicated studio space with access 24/7, with opportunities to work on a very large scale if desired. Some previous experience is necessary and this course is not suitable for absolute beginners. This workshop is open to a maximum of 16 participants

SKETCHING NATURE
Mon 5th – Fri 9th August
With Gordon D’Arcy
Course Fee €350
5 nights B&B accommodation plus 2-course lunch each day €230 single / €185 double or twin p.p.
This course is designed to introduce participants to the joy of sketching natural themes in the Burren. Gordon D’Arcy’s life-long experience of drawing and painting birds, animals, insects and plants will be shared with those who have a similar passion but who may have not given satisfactory expression to their enthusiasm. Gordon is keen to demonstrate that everyone has a drawing capability and that a fleeting view of an eye-catching image in the field should not be a drawback. It is to be expected that satisfying work will be created that may be developed into pictures, greeting cards etc. Course participants will learn simple techniques enabling them to confidently reproduce satisfying sketches. It is hoped that this initiation will encourage them to make their own depictions inspired by nature. As an aside they may expect to become more aware of and be able to identify many examples of the Burren’s rich natural diversity.
Each day will consist of a morning field trip to a naturally rich location in the Burren followed by an afternoon session in the studio. Some quick sketching will be carried out in the field but the majority of the work will be in the studio. The field trips will be weather dependent and it may be necessary in exceptional circumstances to reverse the indoor and outdoor elements. Clothing and footwear suitable for working outdoors are recommended. The course is for all ages and levels of fitness as field trips will be undemanding.
Gordon D'Arcy is a wildlife artist, author and teacher living and working on the edge of the Burren. He has written a number of books on various aspects of natural history and illustrated most of them. He has regular exhibitions of his art (the next is end July/early Aug, at the Burren College, coinciding with the 'Sketching Nature' course). He teaches nature art under the Heritage in schools scheme, Environmental Science at NUIG and Irish Studies at the Burren College. www.gordandarcynature.com

FRESH EYES
Sun 12th - Tues 14th May
With Barry Walsh and Hanne T. Fisker
Course Fee €230
3 nights B&B accommodation plus a 2-course lunch for Monday and Tuesday €140/€110 double or twin p.p.
The Simplicity of Being
Stillness in the space between
Raw and restful beauty
Calling from deep within
Do you sometimes wish to completely switch off in order to give yourself a breather and time to look upon life and yourself within it with fresh eyes? We aspire to give you an opportunity to return to source and emerge with fresh eyes. There are no garantees, however we offer you time, space and inspiration to explore the simplicity of your being and the life that runs deep within. The potential is always there, the time might just be now.
We will look deep into exploring - the strength of stillness (and sensing); the subtle voice of your innate knowing; to be seen and see yourself with fresh eyes; new perspectives; transform realities; creative choices. The underlying force of our work is the art and genius that lives within the simplicity of your being, something that is much overlooked in a seemingly complex world. ”What does your being and gut feeling have to say to this?”
Workshop activities are deliberatly not set in stone but rather are decided on who and how people turn up, what their needs are and what feels appropriate at the time. The facilitators have a deep repertoire of activities and methodologies to draw from. These include: Presencing techniques | rich conversations | dialogue | outdoor vision quest | coaching | journaling | storytelling | somantic intelligence | the art of listening | safe in silence | exploring through art | seeing deeper than the eye | potential of sensing.
This workshop will help those in transition, in need for renewal, stuck in a rut, want to change behaviours, or simply want time out to be still, reflect and laugh with like minded people in a safe environment. The outcome – fresh eyes.
Workshop over 2 days 2 nights, arrive Sunday 4pm, leave Tuesday 4pm. Places limited to 12.
Hanne T. Fisker - I see Life as a magnificent raw piece of art and there is unlimited creativity running through us all in whatever form or no form it takes. A fearless curiosity of the mystery and art of our existence is the driving force to stretch my work beyond the limits of mind and then a bit more...in this spirit I have founded Art of eX'istence - a tribute to our existence and the simplicity of our being. Through my work as a coach, public speaker and facilitator of workshops I've coached people from all walks in life from the man on the bench to the top athlete, from the senior lecturers in science and CEO's to young upcoming artists. http://hannetfisker.wordpress.com
Barry Walsh – I’m an experienced leadership coach and founder of the People Development Co. As a result of establishing great clarity in my own life I am dedicated to helping others achieve their professional and personal visions by realising their true potential. I rely on ancient wisdom and my life’s learnings to help others. I work with many of Ireland’s leading businesses as well as private individuals.www.barrywalsh.ie
HOW TO BE CREATIVE (IN ANYTHING YOU DO)
Mon 1st July to Wed 3rd July
with Prof. Timothy Emlyn Jones
Course Fee €230
3 nights B&B accommodation plus 2-course lunch each day €150 single / €120 double or twin p.p.
Creative processes from art transferred to your personal interests, passions and problems
Everyone has creative potential, even if they have no wish to make art. The opposite to creativity is order, control and accountability. The opposite to creativity can also be anxiety, inability to take risks, and fear of others. There is so much in our lives that works against our creative potential. This course is about doing something about it in our everyday lives. This course is about rediscovering your inner child and trusting him or her to guide you towards what is best for you. This course is great fun, though it is also deeply serious if you are prepared to take a moment to see it that way (you don't have to).
This course consists of a series of guided practical workshops supported by illustrated talks exploring: how to see familiar situations in new ways; how to find where ideas come from, and how to make more of them; how to recognise the ways you are different from others; how to become different from yourself, stepping out of old habits; how to start to make a difference that may be significant to people in your life.
Based on the core ideas of the creativity course that Timothy Emlyn Jones and Martin Hawkes have been teaching to business students and PhD scholars at NUI Galway for several years, this course takes the principles and procedures of creative processes in art and separates them from the technical aspects of art. You do not need any more artistic experience than a four year old child.
Timothy Emlyn Jones' interest in universal creativity led him to organise drawing workshops for people of all ages and backgrounds; to found the Isle of Skye Scribble Festival; and to teach art in central London schools before teaching in some of the best art schools in the world in Europe, China and America. He is currently Dean of Burren College of Art. Tim has also exhibited drawings and performance art internationally and he is represented in public collections in a number of countries.
