Mark Grote is a professor of sculpture at Loyola UN, New Orleans LA. He presently holds the title of Edward & Adelaide Benjamin Distinguished Professor. His work is predominantly created directly on site: “What I have found most stimulating is to place myself in another location and allow that environment to influence me. The newness and freshness of that environment can be quite stimulating and exciting. This has released me and my art from being tethered to one studio, one geography, one sameness.” These new locations create a freshness and excitement in the art that is derived from each location. The utilization of locally discarded found objects determines their narrative and, more often than not, manifests humor and whimsy. The gathering and making of these art objects are akin to collecting an individual and personal natural history. Grote has participated in several residency programs nationally and internationally: Gasworks studio London, England; Loughborough University, England; Richard Attenborough Center, Lestershire, England; Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Omaha NE; Santa Fe Art Institute of Art, New Mexico; University of Montana, Missoula, MO. He most recently was an artist in resident at Burren College of Art and the University of Albania, College of Art, Tirana, Albania.
In additions to artist residencies Grote has received numerous grants and awards: Fulbright 1992-93; Pollock Krasner; Joan Mitchell Foundation; National Endowment Field grant; State of Louisiana Atlas Grant; Artist and Scholar Residency American Academy, Rome, Italy. He has been the recipient of several Loyola University research grants. Professor Grote has lectured at several colleges and universities in the United Kingdom: Kent Institute of Art, Loughbourgh University, Leeds University, Chelsea College of Art, Kingston on the Themes, Staffordshire University, Plymouth University Art and Design, Northbrook College as well as Norwich School of Art. In the United States he has lectured at Louisiana University, University of Texas, Spring Hill, University of Montana, Converse College, University of South Alabama, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, and Meridian Museum of Art. Grote’s home and Studio are located in Covington LA.
