Martina Cleary,

Martina is a multi-media artist working with photography, video, drawing and text as her primary media. In Ireland she attended NCAD and The Crawford College of Art & Design followed by post-graduate studies at The Academy of Fine Arts and The University of Art & Design, Helsinki. Beginning in the early 90’s, her work has been shown and collected in Ireland, Finland and Germany. Recent shows and awards have included EV+A 2008 at Limerick City Gallery, Impressions 2008 All Ireland Print Show (First Prize) at Galway Arts Centre and ‘Things That Go Bump’ a solo show at Monster Truck Studio & Gallery, Dublin in 2008.
Current projects include; working with archaeologists from the Irish Discovery Program, as part of the Roscommon Arts Office Art@Work Residency and collaborative work with animal welfare organizations in Ireland. Along with her work as an artist and educator, Martina also works as a free-lance curator.
Her work has been supported by The Irish Arts Council, Clare County Council, The Finnish Arts Council, The Finnish Cultural Foundation, The Finnish Institute in London and a number of other regional Arts organizations in both Ireland and Finland.
Teaching Philosophy -
“My aim is to provide students with solid technical know-how combined with an ability to be reflectively self-aware of the context of their studio work within broader forums, whether social, conceptual, political or aesthetic. Art for me is a process of ongoing research and discovery, which encompasses both one’s own personal story, as well as the broader collective constructions of meaning, knowledge and power that surround us. Through my teaching I hope to guide students towards a greater awareness of the effect, role and potential of individual creativity in influencing the personal as well as the public spheres.”
